BRAZIL — Putnam County golfers turned in three of the top four
performances at Tuesday’s Eagle Invitational at Oak Ridge Golf Course.
Cloverdale’s Kayla Langdon placed second with an 85, while Heather
Hughes and Grace Aker of host South Putnam tied for third at 88.
Julia Porter of Monrovia was medalist with a two-over 74. Southmont won the team event with a 403.
South Putnam placed fifth with a 420, while the Clovers were eighth at 489.
Four both county squads, the day was a combination of solid
performances from veterans and new experience for younger players. Not
only was it the first varsity tournament for several girls, they also
had to deal with the day’s intermittent rain.
The Eagles, who lost three seniors from last year’s team, were
anchored by the solid performances from juniors Hughes and Aker. The
other three players are all sophomores and new to the varsity
experience.
Cassie Warren fired a 120, Sarah Dobson turned in a 125 and Kelsey Searles had a 141.
“I was pleased with how they played. I thought they handled it
very well,” Eagle coach Debbie Steffy said. “I wasn’t displeased with
their scores and I’m looking forward to seeing improvement by the end
of the season.”
For the Clovers, Langdon was the obvious highlight. Fellow
returnee Elizabeth Wiley added a 114. Landgon’s score was a 29-shot
improvement over the same tourney last year, while Wiley showed a
21-stroke improvement.
“Kayla and Elizabeth showed great improvement due to their work
on the course this summer,” Clover coach Ken Williams said. “Even
though we placed eighth, we actually scored better than I expected with
two new team members.”
Newcomer Victoria Boyette shot a 122 while Erica Looper had a 168.
“I think Victoria and Erica will both improve rapidly as we
spend a lot of time on the course over these next two weeks,” Williams
said.
Both squads are back in action at 1 p.m. today for the Clover Invitational at Clover Meadows.
